OG image size
Make it 1200 × 630 pixels and keep the important part in the middle. Here is why, and what each platform does with it.
X summary, WhatsApp, iMessage thumbnail: 1:1 — only the centre square. Anything outside the magenta frame is lost.

Design rules that survive every crop
- Centre-safe zone. Keep text and logos within the middle 630 px of the width if square thumbnails matter to you.
- Big type. Cards are often shown under 500 px wide on phones; text smaller than about 40 px in the 1200 px original becomes unreadable.
- Declare the size. Add
og:image:widthandog:image:heightso Facebook can render the card on the first share. - Absolute https URL, publicly reachable, not blocked by robots.txt.

Questions
What size should an Open Graph image be?
1200 × 630 pixels. Meta recommends at least 1200 × 630 for high-resolution link previews, the 1.91:1 shape matches Facebook and LinkedIn cards, and X's large card crops it only slightly to 2:1.
What is the minimum og:image size?
Meta's sharing guide asks for at least 600 × 315 pixels for large previews and says images smaller than 200 × 200 are not used. X requires at least 300 × 157 for summary_large_image and 144 × 144 for summary.
What file size and format?
Use PNG or JPG (WEBP also works on most platforms). X caps card images at 5 MB and Meta at 8 MB, but a small file loads faster when apps fetch it; 100 to 300 KB is a practical target. Do not use SVG.
Why does my image look cut off?
Different surfaces crop the same image differently: square thumbnails in chat apps show only the centre, and X's 2:1 frame trims top and bottom. Keep logos and text inside the centre of the image, roughly the middle 630 × 630 pixels if you want them to survive a square crop.
